Greenway Committee 2009 Summary

  • Our trail guide was published in the summer, after years of work.  Copies of the beautiful 16-page booklet were sent to all Lawrence Township residents at no cost to the township, thanks to the Open Space Committee for its work, Educational Testing Services for the printing and the Lawrence Gazette for the distribution.
  • The Friends of the Lawrence Greenway website was established at www.lawrencegreenway.org.  Containing news and trail information, it is maintained by co-chair Dave Mizenko, whose mapping work has been used this year by the Township’s Engineering Department, the Open Space Committee and the Lawrence Township Conservation Foundation.
  • The Committee’s 19th annual hike was held in October and featured the new 60-acre parkland parcel between the D&R Canal and Princess Road.  (Working on permanent public access for this land is on a future job list.)
  • The Greenway Committee participates yearly in networking opportunities:  Lawrence Nature Center’s Earth Day in April, Community Day in October and November’s Environment Fest in the library.
  • Throughout the year committee members investigate our greenways.  In January we walked with a contingent from Rider while discussing a connection from Lawrence Road across the campus to the trolley line.  In February we blazed and mapped a trail in the Loveless Preserve and in September we mapped, cleared and blazed the trail for our hike.  Member Peter Wood regularly works on the Drexel Woods trails with groups of students volunteering their community service.
