Fire Prevention Bureau
Responsibilities
- Inspection of all commercial buildings and multiple dwellings for enforcement and compliance.
- Review site plans for new construction to comply with the Uniform Construction Code.
- Provide Fire Prevention Programs to the public.
Fire Registrations
All businesses in Lawrence Township are required to register annually with the Township of Lawrence Fire Marshal's office. (Fee is based on square footage of area occupied.)

(NOTE: Businesses designated by the State of New Jersey, Division of Fire Safety, as a Life Hazard use, are exempt from the fee but must still register with Lawrence Township.)
Alarm Registrations
All residential and commercial uses having a burglar, fire or medical assistance alarm which transmits to a central or private alarm company must register one time with the Fire Marshal's Office. (Fee $25.00)

Knox Box Program
Established for businesses that provide a "Knox Box" to be mounted on the exterior of the building, providing emergency information and access for the fire department during off hours.

Fire Safety Permits
Fire Safety Permits are required under certain circumstances, including the following:
- Temporary Kiosks at Mall
- Bonfires
- Tents (900 sq. ft. or more, or 30 ft or more in any dimension)
- Torch Roofing / Tar Kettle Roofing

Housing Bureau

Responsibilities
Inspection of single family dwellings for resale or rentals. Inspection of hotel/motel and multiple dwellings for state and local requirements. Investigation of landlord and or tenant complaints.
Property Transfer/Rental
All single family and two family dwellings being rented must file an application with the Housing Bureau upon change of tenant. (Fee $75.00)
All single family or two family dwellings being sold are required to file an application of sale with the Housing Bureau, prior to sale. (Fee $80.00)
Multiple Dwellings (3 or more families)
All multiple family dwellings, (apartments, hotels/motels) are inspected annually. Copy of fee schedule can be obtained at the Housing Office.

Mercer County Medical Reserve Corps
The Medical Reserve Corps in Mercer County welcomes medical and community volunteers to register and be ready to volunteer when there is a local emergency and/or public health need. Volunteers can register online.
Many MRC volunteers were called to help with the hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Mercer County MRC members will receive training, assistance and an opportunity to network with other persons and organizations focused on emergency preparedness.
