ABOUT US
The Township Manager is the chief executive and chief administrative officer of the Township government. Responsibilities of the Manager include the appointment and removal of Township personnel (except appointments made by Township Council pursuant to State law), the supervision of all departments of the Township government, the negotiation of contracts, the preparation of the budget, the management of municipal property and the coordination of departmental activities.
Employment
Applications for employment are available in the Office of the Township Manager. Lawrence Township is an Equal Opportunity Employer. As a "civil service community," Lawrence Township is subject to the rules and regulations of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. All appointments are made according to merit and fitness and in accordance with the constitution and statutes of the State.
Effective September 1, 2011, all employees of State and local govenment must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under law. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your office, position or employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your office, position or employment. "The New Jersey First Act" (P.L. 2011, c.70)

Regarding terms and conditions of employment, most employees are covered by employment agreements negotiated between a union or association and the Township Manager and subject to approval by Township Council. There are six (6) such bargaining units.
