Grand Marshal Announced for Lawrence Township Memorial Day Parade

The Lawrence Township Patriotic Committee is delighted to announce that Colonel (Retired) Charles J. "Bud" O'Brien, a resident of Lawrence Township, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Lawrence Township Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 25th.

Colonel O'Brien will lead the parade, which begins at 10:00 AM from the Lawrence Township High School parking lot. The parade route will take participants along Princeton Pike, Darrah Lane, Birchwood Knoll, and Berwyn Place. It will feature various participants, including local veterans' groups, military units, marching bands, and community organizations.

The parade will conclude at Veterans Park, located at 100 Oaklyn Terrace, where a Memorial Day service will follow immediately. The Lawrence Township Recreation Advisory Board will provide free hot dogs and water after the service.

Colonel O'Brien has had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, serving for twenty-nine years with half of his service overseas. He began his career as an Armor Officer after graduating from Norwich University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. His assignments included service in Germany, Vietnam, and Cambodia, where he held roles such as tank company commander, aide-de-camp to a U.S. II Field Force commander, and provincial operations advisor. He later commanded the Third Battalion, Thirty-Fifth Armor, First Armored Division, leading the unit along the East German/Czech border. He also became the Army's first liaison officer to the Israel Defense Forces and served as Chief of Public Affairs for the Sixth United States Army in San Francisco. His final active duty assignment was as the U.S. Army Senior Advisor to the New Jersey National Guard.

His military honors include two Legion of Merit awards, three Bronze Stars, six Meritorious Service Medals, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He also earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Arts degree from Trenton State College, and graduated from both the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Colonel O'Brien transitioned to education and volunteer work. He joined the faculty at The Hun School of Princeton, where he taught in the English Department for sixteen years, including five years as Department Chairman. He also served as a board trustee and volunteer for the Mount Carmel Guild of Trenton, with three years as Board President.

Colonel O'Brien has been married for fifty-three years to Judith E. Demcsak of Bayonne, New Jersey, who played an integral role in supporting his successful career.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the parade and the Memorial Day service at Veterans Park. For more information about the parade or the Memorial Day service, please contact the Lawrence Township Recreation Department at recreation@lawrencetwp.com or call 609-844-7067.
