John (Jack) Oakley Jr. is the Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator for Lawrence Township and has been in that position since January of 2008. He is responsible for the supervision of all plans associated with natural and man-made disasters that may affect Lawrence Township and the supervision of all career and volunteer fire and EMS employees. Mr. Oakley works with the police department and assists them with fire and medical incident responses. He has been a volunteer firefighter in Lawrence at the Slackwood Fire Company for 44 years, holding many officer ranks in the organization including Chief in 1995 and 1996. Prior to being employed by Lawrence Township, he was a New Jersey State Trooper for 28 years, having assignments as general road duty trooper in North and Central regions and on the NJ Turnpike., a detective in the Sports Complex Unit, Arson/Bomb Unit, Major Crimes Unit, Cargo Theft and Robbery Unit, Intelligence/Organized Crime Bureaus and Internal Affairs Bureau. He was the Unit Supervisor and Bomb Squad Commander from 2000 through 2003, being trained as a fire investigator, hazardous devices technician and a hazardous materials technician. Mr. Oakley worked many special assignments while with the Division of State Police, most notable was the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and the 911 Terrorist Attack in New York City. He was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Bureau Chief of the Technical Response Bureau and at the time of his retirement he was the Executive Officer of the Special Operations Section of the Homeland Security Branch. Mr. Oakley was born in Trenton, and moved to Lawrence in 1970. He is a Lawrence High Class of 1976 graduate, holds an associates degree in Law Enforcement from Mercer County Community College and is also an alumnus of the F.B.I. National Academy, Class 201. He resides with his wife Samantha in Lawrence. |

With the end of summer and hurricane season upon us it’s important to insure your generator is safe and proper condition. The Emergency Management Department has provided some tips to maintain safe usage care of your generator.
For the past few months, the Township has been working on updating the Township’s Hazard Mitigation Plan along with every jurisdiction in the County/State. The following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Mercer_Citizen enables residents of Lawrence to provide input. It is a survey to help update our hazard mitigation plan so we can apply for FEMA mitigation funding when needed. This plan is a countywide project identifying hazards such as flood zones, dams, roadway problems, disease, insect infestation – ALL Hazards. Information supplied by the public helps the planners address issues throughout the County and attach funding to mitigate the problem(s). For the past few months, we have been working on updating the Township’s Hazard Mitigation Plan along with every jurisdiction in the County/State.
Carbon Monoxide Alert: Several New Jersey residents found themselves hospitalized in the past for carbon monoxide exposure. The culprit: their gas generators. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious and deadly threat during severe weather. DO NOT under any circumstances bring gas generators indoors or leave them near open windows, doors, garages, etc. The New Jersey Poison Control experts urge the public to heed this warning for the next storm heading our way. The Medical Reserve Corps in Mercer County welcomes medical and community volunteers to register and be ready to volunteer when there is a local emergency and/or public health need. Volunteers can register online.
Many MRC volunteers were called to help with the hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Mercer County MRC members will receive training, assistance and an opportunity to network with other persons and organizations focused on emergency preparedness. The Lawrence Township Emergency Medical Service is committed to being a leader in emergency medical services and providing the finest in quality, professional pre-hospital care to the residents and visitors of Lawrence and surrounding communities.
Our staff is comprised of eight full-time employees, one full-time EMS Chief, and approximately 20 per-diem EMS providers. Our workforce includes skilled professionals from different backgrounds and cultures reflecting the diversity of the community we proudly serve. All of our employees are highly trained in various aspects of emergency services ranging from EMT, Paramedics, Nursing, Fire, specialty operations such as search and rescue, emergency management as well as child car seat installation to name a few.
We continue to strive for excellence in our service to our community and surrounding areas by promoting evidence-based current patient care practices combined with compassion and respect.
Lawrence Township employs 12 career firefighters, who presently operate from the Lawrenceville and Slackwood fire stations staffing three units (Rescue 20, Tower 20 and Engine 20). In addition to responding to all emergencies in the township requiring a fire department response, as well as responding to a variety of medical emergencies in support of our EMS Division, the career firefighters’ duties include the regular running and inspecting of fire apparatus, including exercising pumps and aerial ladders; exercising and refueling powered equipment such as saws, fans, and rescue tools; maintaining breathing apparatus components and oxygen cylinders; mounting equipment and hose on apparatus; and making minor repairs to apparatus and equipment.

The Office on Aging is in the Lawrence Senior Center, located at 30 Darrah Lane East, provides programs, activities, information, assistance and referrals to social services for Lawrence senior citizens, 60 years of age and older. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. |
Lawrence Township Senior Center
The Lawrence Senior Center welcomes Lawrence Township residents age 60 and older to enjoy programs, activities, and opportunities to stay active, connected, and engaged. The Senior Center offers a variety of programs, including exercise classes, health and wellness activities, educational talks, social events, recreation programs, intergenerational opportunities, and volunteer activities.
The Senior Center is located at 30 Darrah Lane East and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
The motto of the Senior Center is “Living It Up, Sharing the Joy,” and Lawrence seniors are invited to do just that. Residents are encouraged to get involved, meet new people, share their talents, and take part in the many opportunities available at the Senior Center.
In addition to daily programs and activities, the Office on Aging staff is available to provide general information and connect seniors with helpful community resources when needed. The Senior Center also serves as a County Nutrition site, offering hot lunches to registered seniors, and hosts AARP Tax-Aide during tax season for free tax preparation assistance.
Whether attending a class, joining a program, volunteering, enjoying lunch, or spending time with friends, the Lawrence Senior Center is a welcoming place to gather, learn, and enjoy good company.
Important: The Senior Center van is not ADA-accessible. Riders must be able to enter and exit the vehicle on their own. There is a step up into the van and the driver cannot provide physical assistance.
Riders who use mobility devices or who need physical help to board must use ADA-accessible transportation services. Riders must be able to lift and carry any personal mobility aid and step into the vehicle safely and independently. If a rider cannot do so on their own, ADA transportation is required.

The Senior Center van is not ADA-accessible. Riders must be able to enter and exit the vehicle independently, including stepping up into the van without assistance from the driver.
Due to vehicle design and safety limitations, the van cannot safely transport riders who are unable to board, ride, or exit independently or who require the use of mobility devices during transport.
Individuals who need assistance or require accessible features should arrange ADA-accessible transportation through Mercer County T.R.A.D.E.
The Senior Center van provides transportation for Senior Center members and Lawrence Township residents aged 60 and older. The primary purpose of this service is transportation to and from the Senior Center for scheduled programs. When availability allows, transportation may also be provided for medical appointments and grocery shopping within Lawrence Township.
• Must be a Lawrence Township resident age 60 or older
• Registration with the Senior Center is required
• Schedule rides at least 48 hours in advance
• Cancel at least 24 hours ahead
• One round trip per day
• Trips must be within Lawrence Township
• Provide doctor’s name, address, and phone number for medical appointments
• Riders must board, exit, and move to their seat independently
• Drivers cannot assist with mobility, lifting, or steadying riders
• Riders must carry any personal belongings and mobility aids without assistance
• Be ready and waiting outside
• Driver waits a maximum of 5 minutes
• Weekly or monthly recurring transportation cannot be scheduled
• Service may be delayed or suspended during poor weather for safety. Decisions are made by Senior Center staff.
• Riders must carry personal bags and items themselves in one trip
• Drivers cannot assist with carrying items
• Seat belts required
• Be respectful to driver and other riders
• No food or beverages except water or medically required drinks
• Driver may refuse service for safety concerns or rule violations
• Food must be secured to prevent spills
• Riders must cancel if sick or unwell

Mercer County Office on Aging Asks Older Adults and Caregivers to Complete Annual Needs Assessment
The Assessment plays a critical role in collecting responses from seniors to determine the needs in the aging community.
